Nintendo DS Lite First Look

Thanks to the incredibly awesome awesome-ness of Noby, friend/Panic's man in Japan, today I was extremely lucky to receive in the mail a brand new Nintendo DS Lite, fresh from Japan. Wow. (Thanks, Noby. Thoby.)

Released on March 2nd in Japan to surprising 'round-the-block lines, the Nintendo DS Lite is Nintendo's fresh revision of its quirky but extremely loveable little-handheld-that-couldn't-but-somehow-did — the touch-screen "third pillar" of innovation that's really quickly becoming more of a foundation than a support for Nintendo.

I'll quit with the words. Here are some first look technoporn/macrotastic pictures of this new system:

Also, as a bit of a test, here's a special Quicktime video first-look at the system! It mostly features my hands, and me trying to sound professional while going on about "clean lines", but it's at least a good comparison of the current Nintendo DS to the new system. Wait until you see this screen!

If you have any questions about the new system, have any feedback about this video review idea, or if you'd like to see any additional videos or photos showing whatever else, drop your thoughts in the comments! Your wish is my command!

And enjoy!

[New here? Don't miss part two and part three!]

Impressive difference!

I think this is one of the only upgrades to one of Nintendo's products that I'm actually going to want to buy.

Love the shiny-ness.. Much like Apple!

How can we ignore the cat sticker? The question is, why isn't the sticker facing the other direction, like the Apple logo on the powerb..um..macbook pro? When you are playing a game, you have an upside-down kitty. Kitty don't like that.

Man, does that DS Lite look smooth. I can't believe the brightness! I better get down to babbages and reserve one.

Oh yeah, great video. Let's see some more!

Here's a question. With the new brightness 'feature' (upgrade...?), what's the battery life like?

How easy is it to pause Mario Kart DS in the middle of a race on the Lite?
Blogger Jeff Liu 3/07/2006 7:10 AM
Have you played Mario Kart on it for more than 15 minutes? I'm wondering about fatigue which i attribute to the already thin profile of the current ds system. As beautiful and even thinner the lite is i'm not sure they considered the user in those regards during the redesign. Or perhaps i just have large hands.
Anonymous Anonymous 3/07/2006 7:47 AM
Hi Cabel. Nice job on the review. Very helpful and well done. The DS Lite looks pretty cool. Might have to get one now. Thanks.

Nice (funny!) video review. I'm a bit concerned by the shape... might be like holding those very square Nintendo 8-bit controllers all over again, but otherwise agree with your review, nice system.
Anonymous Lauri K 3/07/2006 10:24 AM
You should talk about the buttons and the Dpad and the feeling when using it in your review. Balance, shoulder button usage, etc!!
Anonymous Anonymous 3/07/2006 10:33 AM
wow, ds is very useful, specialy for travel
Anonymous cantinero.blogspot.com 3/07/2006 12:22 PM
I would like to ask some questions.
Does it scratched very easily?
How are the speakers compared to the old ds? No difference? They look smaller...

Anyway the greatest ds lite video (and pictures) yet. Outstanding comparison and shows the lite from all angles. Thanks a bundle!

The part I liked the most was when you think "Those screens are so bright and wonderful" and it turns out there are two more brightness steps...

Looks nicer than the first gen, but still not as beautiful as a PSP.

So this is one of the revolutionary handhelds that is gonna rule the world of handheld gaming. PERIOD
Anonymous Anonymous 3/07/2006 1:34 PM
Why am I here? Because you managed to get a proper DS review out before.. well before everyone else.

Typically I would be somewhere else.. don't take it as offense, but I just generally expect sources like forums to come up with the goods.

'Kay the review was great.. even funny dare I say.
You did as good of a job as anyone else and I thank you, It would be nice to check the battery specs at some point.. Enjoy your DS lite dude, looks real nice.

Good choice for going for QuickTime over WMV/real, you sure this isn't your other job or something..
Anonymous Spence 3/07/2006 1:38 PM
Hey guys, I am not the guy who made the video but I can answer some of your questions!

1)Battery Life: with max brightness setting you are looking at about 7 hours gametime max. On the minimum brightness setting (which is the same as the regular DS) it can be max 15+ hours! This is because the upgraded the battery. So already at minimum it can last much longer then the regular DS.

2) From what I can tell from someone who took apart the DS Lite, the speakers are the same.

3) IGN said that the outter coating is much stronger then the GBA or DS paintjob. They just said you can see thumbprints sometimes, but thats not as big a problem as with the PSP, because the inside of the DS is a matte finish, and the DS is clamshell design.

4) The GBA cart DOES stick out the bottom of the machine a little. Not a huge ordeal, but not completely convenient. They make up for it a bit by providing that plug that streamlines the DS like in the video eh.

5) IGN and a few others have said it has much better weight distribution, and it is lighter of course. This was a major factor in causing wrist and hand cramps while playing Mario Kart DS or other such titles.

6) Buttons are not as spongy, more clicky. They are the same as the micro, same with the D-Pad.

Hope this helps eh!?

Yes I'm a Canadian!

Love,
Groovy Guy

Thanks for the questions, everyone!

I'll try to do a follow-up video review answering some of them video-style. Failing that I'll just do a new post. Possibly tomorrow, or next week, depending. :)

Stay tuned!
Blogger Cabel 3/07/2006 2:08 PM
Hey, man.

That was nice and simple yet highly informative vid. Thanks a ton for the 411, and hope to see more things like this in the future.

My only question is, does the maximum brightness make the colors become a little washed out? It's probably just the video, but I'd like to be sure.

Thanks again.

Hey Cabel, the exploded photos load behind the video preview frame (in a 3-D graphical layering sense) in Safari.
Blogger vortech 3/07/2006 2:33 PM
This video sold me and many of my friends on the DS like.

About the top brightness being too bright, I remember EGM saying the same thing about the original frontlit SP - is this even stronger? Secondly, would it be fair to compare the top brightness level to turning your MP3 player up all the way: possible, but unnecessary and possibly painful in the quiet (or in this case, dark)?

"Looks nicer than the first gen, but still not as beautiful as a PSP."
Of course, I can't say anything about that. It's your opinion. I can however say the the DS' design is way smarter. The clamshell design protects it, the matte inner finish keeps fingerprints away and it folds to become smaller when not in use. (same as #1 but for the sake of size).
Anonymous Se[BBB]e 3/08/2006 8:37 AM
Might I ask how much someone can expect to pay for this and the games?
Anonymous Anonymous 3/08/2006 11:13 AM
Yeah it looks very nice indeed. Excited. Yet frustrated at the same time. I only recently(ish) bought a DS. Hell, before that I only recent bought a GBA SP, and before that... etc.

Only two companies get away with it - Apple and Nintendo. Fairplay to them. I'm not sure why they do... it's not marketing, if it was, Sony would be able to do it. I guess it's the loyal fanbase, built through quality products.

So well done Nintendo.

Hey, it's the arm biter again. :-)

Serious questions this time: In your next review/post, could you please address:

- How does the new stylus feel? I bought a 3rd party retractable one for the DSFat. My man hands still cramp after dropping some bon mots on the peeps in Animal Crossing, or operating in Trauma Center though. I'm guessing I'll have to find a retractable stylus for the lite too.

- I see that IGN's description of the weight has been referred to in the comments already. The DSFat cramps my girlie wrists like crazy when I play in bed, or even sitting up, actually, if I'm stylus-ing a lot. Does the lite have this problem?

- Ditto on the dimensions. Especially with Mario Kart, the fatty feels awkward whenever i play (esp. in bed). Does the smaller form factor exacerbate this or is it actually more comfortable?

- Mic placement: weird or not? Spittle on the screen?

Thanks

Excellent reviews. I have a couple of questions that relate a bit more to extended use:

1. Now that you've had the DS Lite for a while, does the shiny surface scratch like that of the iPods of lore and the PSP?

2. What is the difference in terms of battery life of the DS Lite and the DS?

3. Is there a big variation in battery life between the DS Lite at Full brightness and DS Lite at a Medium more normal brightness?

Thanks for putting all this work into your review it has done much to satiate my curiousity.

Blogger Thomas 3/12/2006 7:54 AM
Even though my computer is slower than a turtle and the extensive lagging completely destroyed what fluency the video had, I still got the picture. Overall, I liked it. The only thing I'd wish more than having one now is that it came out in the U.S. at the same time as Japan. To thomas, no, it does not get dirty unless you drop it in mud. To mike, 1. No, gereraly, the DS won't scratch. 2. The battery life is about the same as the origonal DS at MAX BRIGHTNESS (I, personally am impressed with the new battery). 3. Yes, there is. Normal brightness, I think you can expect around 13 or so hours of play time. Max brightness: 7.

VERY VERY nice, i on the other hand just ordered my a Nintendo DS a week before i saw the new Nintendo DS Lite on the internet. I have talked to a store in my area ran by japanese people who import alot of the japan or lets just say import consoles and games, even asian porn movies for the psp. anyway, my main and biggest question is. Will or when will it be released here in the US?, after talking to the store i have mentioned, the person has told me that they will only be released in Japan and the US wont be getting these. could someone please help answer my question?

Thanks and once again really awesome review.

wow totally diffirent and more impressive.
the review was great but you missed many things...like the WIEGHT,when i play mario kart with my old DS my hands nearly get broken from its heavy weight.

and 1 more thing, about the inner buttons re-organizing(shape),,do u think its better-shaped than the old one?

i think it will be very suitable for RPG games such as pokemon "diamond and pearl" 24 for hours playing...thanks.
Anonymous Anonymous 3/17/2006 7:10 AM
Aw-aspiring, I love the simplicity of this design. The only downside is that you still can't view video files on it, but that's not really a problem, I can get a DS flash card and make a media player out of it, sort of like the VLC Portable player :P and since this has a touch screen, media control on this sexy machine will be awsome, it's a shame Nintendo hasn't taken advantage of this yet :(, and in the portable-gaming world, I would appreciate it if the gaming companies didn't just copy all the data from Console Games and just sticking them onto Portables,

Not worth paying for the system again, Original DS is bright enough for me, gets the job done just fine, I think once u buy the DS light you'll get accostomed to it and wont notice the difference again anyways. Not worth it in my opinion if you've already bought the original DS
Anonymous Anonymous 3/27/2006 9:10 PM
I have heard it may come to us in august, so not too far from now.

But you can get in imported, only a couple places has it in stock (even liksang is out), you can get it from www.renchi.com , price a bit steep at $279 or something like that, but for the must have now people, that's the way to go. Hopefully the price will drop a bit when they have more stock on the street....

Or is the Lite somewhat smaller? (In which case, by how much?}
Anonymous dv 4/06/2006 1:20 PM
i WAS going to just buy a normal DS but after seeing that video review I'm definetly going to wait longer (and therefore be able to save more) to get the DS-L.
Anonymous Justin 4/06/2006 2:26 PM
*Gaaaaaaaaa.......* Wooooooooow. Nintendo's outdone themselves with this redesign! But wouldn't you guys rather wait for the DS ULTRA Lite? lol JK. Im for SURE getting it!
Anonymous Jake 4/07/2006 2:28 PM
Hey people,
I really want to get a nintento ds lite. i have recently been thinking of buying just a nintendo ds but then i saw a new one coming out that is way more sexier. But if the price of the lite is too expensive i might just stick to the 1st Ds.
So if anyone knows the price of the lite and when it will be relesing in australia please tell me, becasue iam desperate for one of these! oh and when it is being released in london. thanx for everything..love the review ;)

I am gettin it a.s.a.p. when it hit's US shores.

P.S.
The QUICKTIME video is corruped..? I think so anways..!
Anonymous Jorgie X 4/10/2006 5:35 PM
The video is not corrupted, just super slow the load. You might try loading the video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OKXnvIk2H4

The DS lite is what the original DS should have been. Part of what kept me away from the DS to begin with was the clunky design. I found this page looking for some kind of comparison between the DS and DS Lite, and I found the info I was looking for. The DS Lite is really not much smaller, just a much cleaner design. Not sure I really like the change from the power button to the slider switch, though. I think exposing that on the outside of the clamshell was probably a bad idea.
Anonymous Nimdae 4/11/2006 1:33 AM
The DS Lite is probably going to have more sales than any other handheld out in the market. I like the usual DS but, DS lite is just a nicer piece of work. Nintendo really has it in the bag with this one.The original DS has more sales than the PSP and if you put the DS with the DS lite it will TORTURE and DESTROY sony's PSP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anonymous Anonymous 4/11/2006 9:14 PM
The DS Lite's price is going to be $130
Anonymous Anonymous 4/11/2006 9:21 PM
Not yet, but getting closer,

you can get the white DS Lite at www.renchi.com for $239, which is $40 cheaper than few weeks ago... the blue ones are for $229 as well I think. The thing is no one else has th white one now but them
Anonymous Anonymous 4/12/2006 12:27 AM
But will it support old skool games?
Anonymous Anonymous 4/12/2006 2:04 PM
I was on a Japanese web site...

they come in white ice blue and enamel navy

nice video
Anonymous Anonymous 4/12/2006 6:43 PM
Hi, I found your very informative site searching for some type of comparison between the DS and DS Lite as well, and I was wondering if you could show how pron the DS lite is to figerprints and marks. Thanks!
Anonymous Ajay 4/15/2006 12:12 AM
hey, this article helped me decide whether to get the ds on my birthday (may 3) or wait for the lite. I'm waiting all right! Just wait till I see the look on my friends faces!!!!
Anonymous Anonymous 4/15/2006 5:25 AM
I've seen both your videos on youtube (great videos by the way) and I had a question. Have you heard anything about Nintendo putting the two screens closer together so that the space between them isn't so large? Cuz if they are....I would rather wait for that version.
Anonymous Ping 4/17/2006 2:26 PM

Just FYI I have 14 crystal white models available now. These are in stock and I'm trying to get rid of them so I can get a stock of 4 GB nanos in. Anyway, my price to you is $205 per unit + shipping. If you are interested please let me know at diablo-audio@hotmail.com. I accept secure payment forms such as CC and if you are local (Phoenix, AZ) you can buy it in person. Thanks!

Anonymous Anonymous 5/11/2006 8:14 PM
The DS Lite system is without a doubt Thee best DS ever, um it has a size that's agreeable to many people, not as small as the micro system but it's much smaller than the Original DS. The screen is much better to, even at the original brightness, it has two new brightness settings the screen is the same size which a bonus.

I declare the DS Lite the winner!
Anonymous Anonymous 5/13/2006 11:43 AM

Anonymous MATTHEW!!!! 5/25/2006 3:36 PM
Please tell me that they improved the volume control slider...the one on the original DS was so awful...it was way too hard to get it to a low volume. It was all or nothing. I just hope this is one of the many features that they improved...
Anonymous Anonymous 5/27/2006 5:38 AM
Gimme! I want it so bad! I want it the first day it comes out!

OHHHH EMMMMM GEEEE!!!!!! $!&# I got my DS lite the day it came out. And those edges wich are not smooth in any way. I was kinda coddling it like a baby (my hands are small).I got dirt....I think in the cracks of the regular white plastic, and the glossy kind when you open it. you can look at the side of it and see theese wierd greyish blackish spots in those cracks and i cant get it out.I tried using paper corners and sliding them through the cracks. but the corner made the paper fold to the point wherethe paper is to thick.some one out there please help.

Oh yeah loved the video review...THX for your time.
